Safe Disposal of Medical Waste

Pharmaceuticals

All prescription and over-the-counter medicines should be disposed of properly, and this means returning unused portions to your local pharmacy.

Do NOT flush old or unused drugs down the drain!  These return into the water supplies that we use.  Please see the Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency for more info, and call your pharmacy before returning unused drugs. Pharmaceuticals can be mixed with old coffee grounds to disintegrate the pills, and thrown in a sealed bag into the garbage.

In Monterey, Ordway Pharmacy has a take-back program for pharmaceuticals and sharps.
