Monterey Signs Urban Environmental Accords & US
Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement
In July, 2007 the
City of Monterey solidified its support for a
sustainable and healthy community by signing the
Urban Environmental Accords, which offer 21
actions across seven focus areas that are
ecologically sustainable, economically dynamic,
and socially equitable. Salinas, Pacific Grove
and Marina also have signed the Environmental

Monterey Bans Polystyrene Foam (Styrofoam)
On February 3rd, 2009 the
City of Monterey successfully adopted an
ordinance that prohibits the use of polystyrene materials to be used for take out
food applications within city limits. The City

Monterey’s Green Building Program promotes smart
design and efficient building through leadership
and education in order to conserve resources,
increase economic vitality, and lessen the
impact of the Monterey built environment while
preserving and improving the quality of life for

Here is the math: 90 incandescent
light bulbs using 25 Watt per light bulb consume
2,250 kWh per hour – 90 compact fluorescent
light (CFL) bulbs using 5 Watt per CFL consume

City Buildings
Reduce Energy Consumption and Costs
The City recently
implemented several lighting upgrades in major
facilities such as the three Parking Garages and
the Monterey Sport Center. The projects replaced
lighting fixtures with the latest lighting
technologies available that are now reducing the
average energy consumption by 35%.

City Fleet Goes
Electric! (And You Can Too!) Have
you seen the new electric vehicles adorned with
the great City of Monterey seal on the doors
driving around town?
Some of them prominently display the promising
statements, “All Electric” and “Zero Emissions.”
